The Story of Double Check

American Center is proud to have a casting of the original Double Check sculpture to share with our guests, as well as our community.

When tragedy struck New York City on September 11th, 2001, a Seward Johnson sculpture called Double Check sat calmly in a park below the World Trade Center towers. Rescue workers and media camera rushed onto the scene following the chaos, finding the sculpture lying intact, amid the gray ash. His photo was carried worldwide as “the survivor” and within hours he was being used as a gathering place for private sorrow and public sadness. Draped on the sculpture were flowers, letters, crosses, and candles burning at his feet. He became a symbolic memorial for the people of New York.

Seward Johnson, a resident of New York City, requested that the sculpture stay at Ground Zero to help the healing effort. Johnson has since gathered many of the personal items left at the scene and is casting them to later be added to the original bronze sculpture. The final sculpture will be given back to New York City as a memorial.
